Liyang Star City

Construction of the second phase of Liyang Star City began in 2011 with 19 high-rise buildings on four big sites. it was supposed to be residential and office spaces.

Just a year after construction began, the project changed hands and then finally completed the first 4 high-rises. However, construction on the remaining 15 high-rise buildings was halted in 2013 due to financial concerns.

Over the years, they had problems with flooding in their basements, leading to foundation damage that was difficult to fix. In December 2020, another company bought the property for around $150 million and started a renovation project. When they discovered that the 8-year-old buildings no longer met today's real estate standards, they were torn down. The demolition crew carried out four tons of explosives.

To ensure the safety of the public, regulations were put in place to make this demolition project as safe as possible. Finally, in August 2021, they were demolished following years of planning and construction. There was reportedly no significant seismic activity after each building collapsed into dust within 45 seconds. It was one of the biggest, at once, demolitions in chinas history.
