The Member of the European Parliament, Tanja Fajon, highlighted in the report the repeated introduction of border checks by the Schengen Zone countries, after 2015, especially since the beginning of the Coronavirus outbreak.

“The Schengen Area should be completely functional now, although, in reality, it is completely paralysed. It is kept alive by apparata,” the Slovenian MEP pointed out in this regard.

Fajon said that countries that implement border checks in an unjustified manner should be subject to additional measures.

Regarding the accession of Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania in the Schengen Area, she said, “We do not accept a Europe that functions at two different levels.”

The European Commission has continuously required the accession of Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania into the Schengen Zone.

In May, Johansson said that she wants Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia to join the borderless zone while stressing that the EU needs to update and strengthen Schengen.

Back then, Johansson insisted that the European Union Member States should open their borders once the Coronavirus pandemic is under control. However, the accession of these three European countries into the Schengen Zone is not supported by countries like the Netherlands and France due to “the rule of law concerns.”

Romania and Bulgaria in 2007 became part of the European Union, but the rules of law concerns have impeded both countries from becoming Schengen Area members up to this point. The same problems are faced by Croatia, which joined the European Union in 2013, but it is still not a member of the borderless area
