The Great Life And The Mandaeans. A Gnostic Religion Of The Johannite Tradition

One of the newest communities to join Australia's multicultural melting-pot are the Mandaeans. There are only around seventy five thousand Mandaeans worldwide with nearly five thousand residing in Sydney. Most of the Mandaean community are refugees fleeing the Middle East due to religious persecution.

According to one of their religious leaders, Rabbi Brikha Nasoraia, the community in Australia can't be at peace until they know that the last of their relatives have left the Middle East. They are one of the few surviving ancient Gnostic religions and they honour John the Baptist as their last prophet. Gnosis is a Greek word for experiential spiritual knowledge - often secret knowledge only permitted for initiates. Before and during the early era of Christianity many gnostic groups existed, emphasising gnosis over theology. They were considered heretics by church orthodoxy. Many Gnostics believe that the universe is divided into three aspects; the light worlds or heavens, the dark worlds and the Earth itself. Although there's some speculation as to how and when the Mandaeans first appeared in the Middle East it's generally believed they originated from the areas now known as Southern Iraq and Iran during the 3rd century of the Common Era. In this program we talk about the Mandaean transition to Australia. We explore the issues they feel are hindering them from leading a good life as well as talking about elements of Mandaean religious continuity. Traditionally Mandaeans are highly skilled working as IT specialists, engineers, doctors and jewellers, however many Mandaeans are finding their new status as humanitarian immigrants difficult to bear. Unemployment is one issue that the community is now facing in Australia as they are trying to re-skill themselves and grapple with the English language. The majority of the community have only been here for ten years and their first mandi (worship hall) has just been built in Liverpool. Baptism is the foundation of the Mandaean religion. Flowing river water is seen by the Mandaeans as the connection between heaven and earth. Their time on earth is viewed as an exile from the heavens and baptism is a spiritual renewal with their avowed origins in the stars, Rabbi Brikha calls the Napean their 'stargate'. Last week they celebrated their Little Feast Festival 'Deva Hannina'.
