The real cost of AI image generators like Midjourney and Dall-E

I’ll probably be drawing for the rest of my life, but what if I were just getting started?

When you can generate hundreds of stunning images in just a few hours with nothing more than text prompts there’s maybe no real reason anymore to spend hours creating ideas and images by hand.

It’s not good because developing the capacity to make art is not only about your ability to produce the images. It’s about developing your mind and your creativity and your vision. When you cultivate an advanced set of skills (like drawing) you’re simultaneously growing as a person.Becoming an artist, and improving over the course of your whole life is about growing into your potential and refining who you are.

With computers doing the rendering for us, fewer and fewer will cultivate the capacity and skill to make great art. Because the truth is even when it’s joyful, getting good at this stuff can be hard. And it certainly takes time.By making image generation easy I think AI is potentially robbing humanity of a precious and valuable vehicle for growth, self mastery and overall fulfillment in life.
