Spain's Valencia region saw flooding impact several communities this week as it saw a record-breaking amount of rainfall in the month of May, stranding people on their submerged vehicles and leaving farmlands and parts of coastal towns underwater.
By 8 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Valencia, located on Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast, registered 201.1 litres of rain per square metre over a span of 24 hours. It is the largest rainfall registered for the month of May since record-keeping began in 1871. Parts of the provinces of Castellón, Alicante and Valencia, each located within the region, were impacted.
With rain showing no signs of abating, the country's weather agency Aemet designated a yellow alert for the region on Wednesday.
