The Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Kostroma Region announced the detention of the alleged perpetrator of the fire in the Polygon club, which claimed the lives of 15 people.

"Police officers in hot pursuit identified and detained a suspect in an unlawful act in one of the entertainment venues in the city of Kostroma, which resulted in a fire and death of people," the press service of the department said.

The suspect has now been handed over to investigators.

"According to the latest data, the fire killed 15 people," he said.

Another five people suffered minor injuries and received outpatient care.

The death toll from a fire at a nightclub in the Russian city of Kostroma has preliminary reached 13, with 4 more people injured, a spokesperson of regional emergency services said.

"According to preliminary data, there are 13 deaths already and 4 more people are injured," the spokesperson noted.

The fire erupted overnight at the "Poligon" nightclub and restaurant and spread over 3,500 square meters (37,670 square feet). According to the Russian emergencies ministry, 250 people were evacuated from the building.
