Nova Kakhovka (Kherson region): preparing for defence

Russian soldiers digging trenches to strengthen their reserve positions near Nova Kakhovka ,stumbled upon the remains of a Soviet soldier from World War II.
If you look closely at the video, you can see that there are many trenches being dug around the city. Why create trenches if the army is getting ready to retreat?
