On November 11, 1918, the Armistice of Compiègne was signed. Thus ended the First World War. A year later, in 1919, some states celebrated the anniversary of the end of the war. In 1926, the US Congress passed a resolution calling on the states to commemorate this date as a mark of respect for World War I veterans. The ceremony was supposed to begin on November 11 (11 months) at 11 o'clock. This day was called Armistice Day. In 1954, on June 1, this holiday was renamed Veterans Day and since then it has been dedicated to veterans of all wars. Veterans Day is dedicated to living combatants and is distinct from Memorial Day, which is celebrated in May. Usually this day is celebrated with parades and meetings of veteran.
