First vehicle in Indonesian-The Initial Motorcycle Arrived in Indonesian
The initial motorcycle arrived in Indonesian
A useful and effective mode of transportation are motorcycles. Motorcycles are renowned for being quick, affordable, simple to use, and able to escape traffic.
Due to their affordability, motorbikes are more common than cars in Indonesia, particularly among the middle and lower classes. The motorcycle may thus also travel to far-off places.
But when did Indonesia get its first motorcycle?
Motorcycles were the first motorized vehicles in Indonesia before cars, according to James Luhulima, who wrote about this in his book Car History & The Story of the Presence of Cars in This Country.
In 1893, the motorbike made its debut in Indonesia. Indonesia was still referred to at that time as the Dutch East Indies. The automobile, meantime, did not appear until 1894.
Indonesia's first motorcycle. John C. Potter, an Englishman, was the owner of the Hildebrand and Wolfmüller motorcycle.
The first motorcycle to enter Indonesia was from Germany and was labeled Hildebrand und Wolfmüller.
The brothers Henry and Wilhelm Hildebrand, along with their business partner Alois Wolfmüller, were steam engine engineers who created the Hildebrand und Wolfmüller motorcycle.
Through the Port of Semarang in Central Java, the motorcycle made its way to the Dutch East Indies.
Although Indonesia was then governed by the Dutch, John C. Potter, an Englishman, was the first motorcycle's owner rather than a Dutchman.
At the Oembol Sugar Factory in Probolinggo, East Java, Potter was a machinist.
Potter is said to have ordered the bike directly from Germany in the book Satanic Crete (de duivelswagen), Autopioniers van Insulinde, F.F. Habnit, moesson reeks, 1977.
In his book, James stated on Page 59, "John C Potter was listed as the only individual utilizing motor vehicles in Indonesia throughout 1893, in this case motorcyclists."
Hildebrand and Wolfmüller motor
The Hildebrand and Wolfmüller bicycle is not comparable to the modern bicycle. The motor is devoid of any chains, gears, batteries, or electrical lines.
The Hildebrand und Wolfmüller motorcycle featured in Harry N. Abrams' The Art of the Motorcycle has a two-cylinder, 1,489 cc horizontally arranged engine.
It takes a significant amount of preparation to drive. About 20 minutes are needed to start and stabilize the engine."James composed.
In order to make the engine simple to start, Potter practically burns the engine's exterior with a spirtus to heat it up.
