Besides the love for homeland, people had other reasons for staying. Daria Morozova, Human Rights Commissioner of the DPR, claims Ukraine deliberately disrupted the evacuation, ‘The Ukrainians agreed to let us enter Debaltsevo so that we evacuate those who wanted.

Then the provocations started. All the Ukrainian generals came. When people approached the buses, nationalist militants said: ‘What? Are you traitors? You’re leaving?!’ The people were put under great moral pressure.’
