New wine breaks old bottles (The new cloth and the old garment Mark 2:21-22, Matthew 9:16-17I remember a few years back I had a car that had a small chip in the windshield were a rock had struck it, nothing major just a small chip. Well one day I decided that I was going to wash the car, so I got everything ready and started to spray the car down. As soon as the water hit the windshield it just began to spiderweb all over. I guess the cool water and the warm windshield did not mix as the small chip quickly turned into a windshield that had to be replaced quickly. The introduction of the water to an already damaged windshield caused a reaction that I was not expecting, it destroyed it. In this parable Jesus teaches us about His Kingdom by using an analogy that everyone would understand. This region used wine as a way of preserving the grape harvest for future consumption and they all knew what would happen if you tried to put new wine in an old wine skin, it caused destruction. Jesus wanted everyone to understand that when they became a new creature through salvation that they had to get the old self out of the equation, or everything would just fall apart.
My windshield had some seemingly small issues that quickly showed to be major issues when the water was added to it. We do not always realize it, but we are all damaged vessels with major issues that derive from our sin nature. When we try to hold on to the past and yet be filled with the spirit of God then it is not going to end well, the cracks that was not visible will begin to show and everything will be spilled out. Therefore, scripture says that we must be born again (John 3:3), the old broken man cannot hold the spirit of God. The mistake that many make is they want to mix the old with the new and it just ends up spilling out everywhere. They want religion that covers up their mistakes and flaws and makes them feel good about themselves, but they do not want to fully surrender their heart to God because this means they will have to deny their flesh and what it craves. The only way any of us can hold the spirit of God is to all the Holy spirit to completely renovate, regenerate, and renew us daily by wholly submitting to the authority of God in our lives.
