While middle-water fish typically live between 200 and 1,000 meters below the surface of the ocean, they approach the surface of the water before sunset to feed before diving back to the depths to hide from predators. Through this action, it contributes to what is known as the "biological pump" that captures carbon from the air and transports it to the depths of the ocean.
