Hemiplegia is not an independent disease, but a neurological symptom that can accompany various diseases and injuries, which consists in limiting the sensorimotor function of the upper and lower extremities on one side of the body. Complete paralysis occurs when the patient's arm, leg, face, torso, or one side of the entire body is affected.
Loss of mobility occurs due to damage to the motor areas of the cerebral hemisphere opposite the paralyzed side of the body, or damage to the spinal cord on the same side where symptoms are observed.
Hemiplegia does not apply to independent diseases. Violation of motor mobility occurs against the background of various pathological conditions.
Causes of paralysis may include:
strokes of a cerebral or spinal nature - a violation of blood circulation in the vessels leads to the death of nerve cells and malfunctions in nerve conduction, which in turn leads to mobility restrictions;
traumatic brain injury;
autoimmune diseases in which the sheaths of the nerve fiber are destroyed;

The disease is reversible - with early treatment and rehabilitation, partial, and sometimes even complete recovery of motor activity is possible.

Outwardly, this is manifested by the following symptoms:
fuzziness and inconsistency of movements;
involuntary movements of the limbs, convulsions;
a sharp increase in muscle tone - spasticity, in which it is difficult for the patient to even move the limbs;
decreased mobility of the affected body parts - recovery is very slow, over several months and even years;
failures in the manifestation of some reflexes (for example, swallowing);
violation of sensory in the affected areas - patients do not feel pain, touch or cold;
tingling or burning sensation;
distorted facial expressions, sluggish and fuzzy speech.
If hemiplegia has come as a result of a stroke, the patient faces many difficulties. In a sense, he has to learn to live again. Some patients lose the skill of self-care, are unable to concentrate when performing the simplest actions (for example, fastening buttons or combing), lose the ability to express their thoughts and emotions. In severe cases, urinary and stool incontinence is possible.
The severity of some symptoms depends on which part of the brain has been destroyed. With the defeat of the right side, the ability to physically control one's body suffers more. If the lesion touched the left hemisphere, speech suffers, as well as the ability to certain skills, the intellect is disturbed.
In children, such disorders significantly impede not only physical, but also mental and intellectual development.
