Yuma Arizona Territorial Prison was built by the inmates and remained open for 33 years, closing in 1909. Over time, there were 3069 prisoners including 29 women. The crimes ranged from murder to polygamy. The prison had more amenities than most of the Yuma residents; electricity, two bathtubs, three showers, 2000 book library and a band. After the closure, the Yuma High School operated at the prison from 1910 to 1914. The High School adopted the mascot name, the Criminals, and the name stands to this day. In 1924 the Southern Pacific Railroad demolished portions for the prison to build a new railway. In 1950 the Arizona State Parks took control of the prison. Today, the prison is the most visited site in Yuma.
