On June 2022 the perseverance rover took some samples from the surface of mars. While doing so the perseverance rover marked a letter "L" by engraving three tiny laser dots. Perseverance used a laser that's part of its mast-mounted Super-Cam instrument.
This will help scientists know the orientation of samples when they're brought back to Earth via NASA's planned sample return mission.
