In this episode, we unbox and test out the WiMaxIt 15.6 in 1080p HD portable monitor for a laptop that is equipped with a touch screen for gaming and productivity on the go!

Now that conventions are back and I'm starting to travel more, having the ability to work and play on the road is getting to be important again. Sure, hotels have televisions, but how often is it a pain to get access to the HDMI ports on the back? More so, what if you wanted to connect your computer to that display to work on a computer? A lot of times that won't work. That's where I have come to appreciate the WiMaxIt line of portable monitors and was excited to check out their latest, which also features a touch screen.

At 15.6 in, it's not the biggest monitor around, but that's kind of the point. It's designed to be functional and portable. It's actually slightly larger now than the monitor in my laptop that I bought earlier in 2022. The bezels are fairly small, which I appreciate, but it feels like this unit has a little bit more heft than others that I've tested from them in the past. I don't know if that's due to the touch screen built into the digitizer ot if they're using more robust materials, or what.

To connect your devices to the monitor, there are a number of different inputs. There are two USB C inputs on the side, along with a mini HDMI. They thoughtfully include 2 USB C cables, and a mini HDMI cable to make it easier for you to connect your devices. There's also a USB OTG port on the side for micro USB if you so need it.

You don't want your monitor getting scratched up while you are transporting it, which is why they thankfully included one of their folio cases that double as a display stand. There are a few different ways you can configure this to adjust the angle, however, I bought a portable monitor stand a number of years ago for one of their other monitors that is infinitely more adjustable and, in my opinion, more sturdy.

I started to test things out by connecting my capture card via the mini HDMI port and fired up Battletoads and Double Dragon from Retro-bit for the NES on my HDMI-modded top-loader. I was actually really surprised at how good everything looked and sounded. For a smaller speaker, you'd expect it to be fairly tinny, and it's not the most robust you'll ever hear, but it's better than you probably expect. And it was LOUD at high volumes too!

Up next I connected my Nintendo Switch via the dock and, much like the NES, it played perfectly fine. I did not notice any additional lag, delay, or latency while playing. One thing of note is there is no game mode on this monitor for improved responsiveness and reduced latency, however, I never felt like it was an issue.

While I had my Switch handy, I wanted to see if I could use this monitor without a dock. Simply connecting a USB-C to a USB-C cable did not provide any video output from the system, but once I hooked up an external power supply it popped right to life. I know this isn't the safest way to connect your switch as I am sure this is not a PD 2.0-compliant device, but in a pinch, it works

My final tests were with my laptop and my tablet. Connecting to my Republic of Gamers laptop, everything worked exactly as it should including the touch panel. I was able to open programs, open folders, scroll through photos, and everything worked exactly as it should. When connected to my Samsung Galaxy tab S7, it mirrored everything on my main display, however, touch was not functional and there was no way that I found to extend the display and not mirror it.

Why it RoX:
- Good viewing angles
- Touch display
- Easily transportable
- Multiple inputs
- All cables and a power supply included

What could be improved:
- Colors and picture are soft
- Touch screen does not work with tablets, Samsung dex, or the switch
- Micro HDMI is a bit fragile
- No reduced latency game mode
- Folio stand is not the sturdiest

Should you buy one?
I have used one of these monitors as a second display for years. It's small, light, and convenient to take with you. Add in the touchscreen functionality and you have a real winner. Does it have the most authentic color reproduction? No, the colors are definitely soft, but if I'm using this it's normally because I am on the go. For situations like that, this does the job. Add in the bonus of being able to connect to my gaming systems, and hotel room gaming tournaments just became a lot more interesting.
