Executive director of Taronga Zoo Simon Duffy says only one of the lions that escaped this morning needed to be tranquilised, with the others calmly returning to their enclosure. One adult lion and four cubs were spotted outside their main enclosure this morning at about 6.30am, still separated from the rest of the zoo by a six-foot fence. He said less than 10 minutes elapsed between the animals exiting the enclosure and the full emergency response being enacted. Vets equipped with tranquiliser guns safely used them on one of the lion cubs. A full review is now underway into how the lions managed to leave the enclosure.
