North Korea fired at least 10 missiles of various types from its east and west coasts on Wednesday, South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense said.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the launches mark the first time a North Korean ballistic missile has fallen close to South Korea’s territorial waters – south of the Northern Limit Line – since the division of Korea.

The barrage of missile tests set off an air raid warning in South Korea’s Ulleungdo island that sits about 120 kilometers (75 miiles) east of the Korean Peninsula. JCS said one short-range ballistic missile fell in the international waters 167 kilometers (104 miles) northwest of the island.

Wednesday’s launch is North Korea’s 29th this year, according to a CNN count, and comes after the United States and South Korea began previously scheduled military exercises called “Vigilant Storm” on Tuesday.

The maneuvers involve 240 aircraft and “thousands of service members” from both countries, according to the US Defense Department.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is scheduled to meet with his South Korean counterpart Lee Jong-sup at the Pentagon on Thursday.

eporter Lee Sang-hyeon Kim Ji-heon = The Joint Chiefs of Staff fired an air-to-surface missile into the high seas north of the NLL in response to North Korea's launch of a ballistic missile south of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the East Sea on the 2nd.

"The South Korean military has conducted precision air-to-ground missile firing by our air force in response to North Korea's launch of short-range ballistic missiles today," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

"We fired three precision air-to-ground missiles from the South Korean Air Force's F-15K and KF-16 in the East Sea at a distance 'in the high seas north of the NLL and at a distance corresponding to the area where the missiles provoked by North Korea' came."

The South Korean military's precision firing showed that it was determined to respond decisively to any provocation, including short-range ballistic missiles from North Korea, as well as the ability and readiness to strike the enemy with precision, the JCS said.

"As North Korea continues its provocations despite repeated warnings from our military, I would like to warn you once again that North Korea is solely responsible for all subsequent events," he said.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff emphasized, "The military maintains a full readiness posture to ensure an overwhelming victory at all times while tracking and monitoring related trends in preparation for additional North Korean provocations."
