In this lecture we will review Reconciliation and Forgiveness. Reconciliation and forgiveness serves as a path to restore interpersonal relationships following destructive conflicts. It presents a contrast to focus on retribution emphasized in our society as the primary approach to understanding conflict resolution.

The wounds of interpersonal conflict often remain long after the offending interactions that hurt us have concluded. Most people remember painful memories of hurtful conflicts decades later.

Effective Apology Main Components (1) Linguistic indication (I apologize for hurting you); (2) Admission of responsibility (it was my fault this happened); (3) Explanation (I called you a jerk because I was angry about your decision); (4) Offer of repair ( I’d like to sit down and talk so I can listen to your experience of the conflict); and (5) Forbearance/promise not to repeat the offense (I promise I will avoid name-calling in the future).
