Albert Rieger: A Collection of 18 Paintings
Albert Rieger was an Austrian painter best known for his dark, muted landscapes of Vienna. He frequently depicted mountains, waterways, and forests rendered in great detail with a particular relish given to the effects of light, using oscillating brush marks and contrasting moments of shadow to animate his subjects. Born in 1834 to renowned Italian painter Guiseppe Rieger, the younger Rieger resided in Vienna from 1838 onward, focusing on his immediate surroundings as inspiration for his prolific output. The artist’s career was marked by achievements, such as being awarded honorary membership in the Vienna Academy of the Arts and his reception of the Grand Gold Austrian Swedish-Norwegian medal. Rieger died in 1905.
