Tested: 2023 Aston Martin DBX 707 More Than Just A Pretty Face
The 707 treatment brings a heady 60-mph time of 3.1 seconds to Aston Martin's DBX SUV.
The sports car company that created the SUV is a phenomenon that fans have witnessed with varying degrees of horror, excitement and acceptance since the Porsche Cayenne debuted. With its DBX, Aston Martin has arguably—and, well, surprisingly—has been the most successful in transferring its sports car design language to SUV form. The brand, however, has also realized that the waning days of internal combustion are not the time to hold back when it comes to horsepower. So while the standard DBX makes 542 horsepower from the AMG-supplied 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, the new DBX 707 model makes 697 horsepower—or 707 PS in better European terms.
The design of this high test version has, of course, been changed, mostly for functional reasons. The 707's grille opening is 27 percent larger to allow for greater airflow for engine cooling. Flanking it are revised air intakes that are divided in half by horizontal DRL lighting elements. There are a few new aero bits: a carbon fiber front splitter, revised skirts along the rocker panels, air deflectors in front of the front and rear wheel openings, cut air outlets to the rear quarter panels, an extended rear diffuser, and a longer one. rear spoiler. The mirror caps and side frames can be fabricated in carbon fiber or black to match window surrounds, hood vents and roof rails. Thankfully, neither of these additions detracts from the DBX's organic form too much — though we're not particularly big fans of that protruding rear air duct and diffuser. However, this is far from being an over-the-top Mansory-style aftermarket.
The increased power output comes from the same 4.0-liter V-8 as the standard DBX. Of course, the engines aren't exactly the same: There's a new turbocharger, a redesigned induction and exhaust system, and a reprogrammed engine control unit to set things up. The massage was done at Aston Martin under powertrain chief engineer Ralph Illenberger, who is from AMG, knows this machine well. To cope with the extra output, the standard DBX nine-speed automatic transmission is replaced with an AMG version that features a wet clutch package instead of a torque converter.
HIGH: Acceleration is durable, the leather-covered cab is a smelt pleasure, the sleek look pops up in other SUVs.
