Here it is, Episode 001 of Shoot the Core-cast! The audio version originally debuted in August of 2018, and was the inaugural episode of a podcast that has been running over 4 years now, all about shooting games. We kick things on in style with the arcade classic that helped to cement the popularity of the genre in the mid-late 1980's, brought a distinct horror element into the mix, and put strategy and level routing at the forefront, which influenced many shooters in the years since. For Irem to have hit the mark like this right out of the gate was truly remarkable. We break down the basic gameplay, as well as looking at multiple ports of the game, their strengths and weaknesses, and the overall legacy of R-Type and its sequels.
