Since far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro took office in 2019, the rate of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has climbed sharply. The area destroyed in the first half of 2022 is 80% larger than the same period in 2018, the year before Bolsonaro became president, according to INPE figures.
