Cauldron Painting on Black Paper in Gouache Process/Tutorial Video

I finally got around to making a gouache painting tutorial. This one is of a cauldron surrounded by medicinal plants. I painted this for the #Castlearts #halloween #artchallenge

So, since this is on #blackpaper I paint a light layer of white underneath all objects so that the colors will show. It is hard to get things to show on top of the black so I turn it into fake white paper first lol.

I paint the background first then gradually move into the foreground. This is in contrast to using colored pencils where I will start with the foreground, then move to the background

Then I add on varying shades and tones of the main color I want, which is mainly the green of the leaf, and then highlights and shadows. I use a hair dryer to dry the layers of paint so I don't end up with messy moosh. When I want to blend the layers use a brush with a little bit of the color that I want to blend in.

For flowers, I follow a similar method. Since they are much more colorful than the leaves in this image (yes leaves can be colorful sometimes), I used more layers and less water. I control the water very tightly because I don't want a huge puddle and I am using 90lb / 150 g/m2 Sketchbook paper so it is thinner than mixed media, bristol, or watercolor paper. This paper can melt if I put too much water. It also "buckles" easily but I don't care about that. I've almost painted a hole in my images a couple times lol.

When I am done with everything I might add on a few extra elements like extra leaves, highlights, etc. In this case, I just added more green leafy stuff to fill in the painting.
