On April 4, 2022, Patrick Lyoya was stopped by Officer Christopher Schurr of the Grand Rapids, Michigan Police Department. Schurr was able to determine that Lyoya had multiple warrants as well as driving on a suspended license.

As Schurr attempted to arrest Lyoya, there was a scuffle which then lead to a chase across a nearby yard. Eventually Schurr tackled Lyoya and during the struggle on the ground, Schurr tazed Lyoya multiple times to no avail. Eventually, Lyoya was able to gain control of the tazer and Schurr shot Lyoya in the back of the head, killing him.

Schurr was indicted on June 9, 2022 for one count of Second-Degree Murder. He faces life in prison.

This Preliminary Hearing is for a Court to determine if there is enough probable cause to have this case bound over to the Grand Jury for possible indictment. The Court will make its determination on Monday, October 31, 2022.
