poem text:
no desire to be there
but there, nevertheless.

childlike joy in
bracing your body
against the waves as they
come crashing into you,
foamed and cascading,
and your foothold’s
lost as the sand shifts
away in the recession,
taking the seaweed
and your confidence
with it.

pushing above,
pulling below.
opposing forces
like same polarity
magnets.

nostrils flooded
with the scents of
seaweed, saltwater, and sand
as it tries to enter
your esophagus
and lungs.

you’re knocked down.
splashing about,
thrashing.

the waves
cover you in a
wet blanket
of saline,
and shoves you
back towards land.

a warning.

you stand,
staring out at that
grandiose, roving body,
feeling small,
and hear that
oceanic taunt:

you don’t belong here.

but you dredge
back in,
a child of the sea,
to reclaim your home
within the waves.
