Man's best buddy is now present in many aspects of our day - and nocturnal - life. It's a bond that dates back 30,000 years. Yes, you read that correctly. 30,000(!) years. Dogs were the first creature man domesticated, the first method humans adapted to our surroundings - and that fact affected, well, everything. Dogs are regarded as man's best companion.

They lie in our beds, rule our Instagram feeds, and influence our public spaces. Do dogs, however, hold the answer to our survival? The gray wolf began the lengthy evolutionary process to become our beloved household pet 30,000 years ago, changing the trajectory of our life in the process.

What we do know for certain is that all current canines are derived from the gray wolf. And that packs of these wolves most likely followed early humans - a nomadic people - about, trying to feast on the leftovers and garbage they created. According to the hypothesis, a few wolf eventually became close enough to people to become somewhat domesticated. And people discovered the value of having an animal nearby for safety, hunting, and other purposes.
