Ukrainian and Russian troops dug into muddy trench lines north of the regional capital Kherson, exchanged rocket, mortar and artillery fire on Friday (October 28), a daily ritual since Ukraine drove Moscow’s forces back toward the port city last month.

Ukrainian military regulations prohibited identification of the location in Mykolaiv province, bordering Russian-held Kherson.

Ukrainian soldiers manning a mortar hidden in bushes fired high explosive rounds at Russian positions around a grain silo less than a km (half a mile) away.

"There is constant shelling every day, mornings and nights, all day long. Artillery, cluster bombs even though they are banned. Shelling every day," Vadym who also identified himself with his nom de guerre Hlavbuh, said.

Oleh Zelinskii, media relations officer, said Ukrainian gunners were targeting Russian armored vehicles and fighting infantry vehicles.

"The boys used 82 mm calibre yesterday against (Russian) light equipment, Now, today ... they will use the mortarts against heavier vehicles - armoured personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles, we have been given target coordinates by the reconaissance. We will fire three shells and will see what happens," he said.
