A British kayaker who clung onto a buoy in the Channel for two days and survived by eating mussels and seaweed had to be rescued by passing fishermen.

The 28-year-old man had set off from Dover to France in only a pair of swimming trunks.

But midway through his voyage in the inflatable vessel, he capsized in the dangerous shipping lanes and lost his kayak.

The only thing the man could grasp was a buoy, which is where he spent the next 48 hours, according to reports in the Netherlands.

Luckily for the marooned man, a group of Dutch fishermen were making their way back to France after what they described as a "disappointing" haul.
