Are We Moving Closer To A Nuclear Showdown?!

Since the end of World War II, the number one foreign policy priority for nearly every American president has been to avoid war with Russia. Everyone is aware that a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia, the two largest nuclear powers, would effectively lead to the end of the world.

Despite this understanding of mutually assured destruction, we came perilously close to a nuclear showdown with Russia during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Fortunately, we had President Kennedy at the time.

JFK, the youngest president ever elected, remains one of our nation’s most admired politicians. This is partly due to his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis, in which he masterfully de-escalated the crisis and struck a settlement with Soviet leader Khrushchev instead of following the recommendation of his Joint Chiefs of Staff (who urged him to launch an attack on the USSR).

Today, however, the nation’s oldest elected and least popular president appears to be employing the opposite approach that Kennedy did. Last week, President Biden told a group of supporters that the “prospect of Armageddon” has not been this imminent since the Cuban Missile Crisis. However, rather than genuinely seeking a negotiated off-ramp with the Russians, this administration appears to be bringing us closer to conflict.
