Albert Carel Willink was a Dutch painter whose style of Magic realism was referred to as "imaginary realism."
Albert Carel Willink was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on March 7, 1900.
He was the oldest child of Jan Willink, a mechanic, and Wilhelmina Altes. His father was a hobbyist painter who encouraged his son to paint.
In 1923, when Willink exhibited with the November group, his earliest paintings were expressionist, but he also painted abstract works. At the conclusion of 1923, he returned to Amsterdam. By 1924, he had adopted a figurative style heavily influenced by Picasso's neoclassical paintings of the early 1920s and Léger in particular. Later in the decade, Willink developed a magical realist style similar to Giorgio de Chirico's metaphysical paintings.
Willink lived in Amsterdam from 1924 until his death. Frequently, his realistically rendered paintings depict slightly unsettling scenes occurring in front of imposing structures. He also created numerous portraits.
