The second track on British rock band Dire Straits' fifth studio album, Brothers in Arms, is titled "Money for Nothing" (1985). It was made available as the second single from the album on June 28, 1985, via Vertigo Records. The song's lyrics are written from the perspective of two working-class males who are commenting on music videos they are seeing while listening to the song. Sting makes a cameo appearance in the song and contributes background vocals, including the "I want my MTV" opening and chorus in his distinctive falsetto. [2] When MTV Europe debuted on August 1, 1987, the ground-breaking video was the first to air on the channel. [3]
