Most people who like to read about world war 2 will know that the majority of damage to german industrial plants during the war was due to two types of american bombers: the b17 and b24. However, even before america was involved in ww2, there were already plans to produce an enormous new aircraft to succeed the two aforementioned planes, one that would eventually go on to drop nuclear weapons on japan and end the conflict. This plane was the b29 Superfortress. This film, made when the war was still going, explains the processes involved with the conception and eventual production of this legendary airplane. It shows archive footage of workers assembling the planes in huge factories that seem to stretch for miles. The planes are put together in pieces using a lot of complex machinery. Also shown are some of the b29's advanced features, such as the innovative new design of its flaps on the wing's trailing edge. Flaps are movable, hinged rear sections of a plane's wing that allow it to either increase or decrease the amount of lift it has. The b29's flaps are so advanced that when fully lowered, they allow the huge plane to land at relatively low speeds and come to a stop quickly. The plane's tires also require less pressure than a bicycle. One of the most important features of the bomber is its pressurized cockpit, meaning the crew doesn't need to have oxygen masks above a certain altitude. Finally, they go over how b29's took off from bases in china during the latter stages of the war in order to bomb targets in mainland japan. The tables have turned for the japanese empire, who, just a couple of years before, committed atrocities in china the likes of which the world has never seen. This film is ok. It didn't tell me much I didn't already know about the b29, aside from some of its specifications, like how its wingspan alone is longer than the entire Wright Brothers flight. If you read about ww2 already, you probably don't need to watch a program like this, since the subject aircraft is renowned for being one of the best planes ever (even today). I still liked how they showed the planes being made in the factory at an astonishing rate, which speaks volumes about how overwhelming american industrial power was, even in the 40s.
