Pepe Le Moko, a hoodlum who got away from France with a fortune in gems, has for a long time lived in, and practically controlled, the mazelike, impervious Casbah, "local quarter" of Algiers. A French authority demands that he be caught, however guileful Examiner Slimane realizes he want just wait for his opportunity. The smooth Pepe progressively views his fortress as likewise his jail, particularly when he meets delightful Parisian guest Gaby, who helps him to remember the roads to which he dare not return...and stimulates the distraught envy of Ines, his Algerian special lady.
