The acquisition followed an agreement between Amazon and Grubhub's parent company, Just Eat Takeaway, that provided Amazon the option to buy a 2% share in Grubhub while exploring a sale.

Grubhub CEO Adam DeWitt said, "We're certain this offering will expose additional customers to Grubhub+ and bring more business to our restaurant partners and drivers."

After a pandemic surge, Grubhub's growth has halted as people resort to in-person dining and takeout. Takeout accounts for most digital orders, according to a May research by Paytronix, a consultancy firm for restaurants, retail companies, and convenience stores.

While delivery was king before and during the pandemic, takeout orders now dominate digital orders, with figures even higher than pre-pandemic, Paytronoix claimed. Takeout orders "jumped from 35% of orders in January 2020 to a majority in March 2022, a trend that appears to be accelerating.
