California Earthquakes: Will "The Big One" ever happen?

California was hit by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in the San Fransisco Bay Area this week. As such, I thought I'd take the time to examine some seismological data in regards to the likelihood of an earthquake stronger than magnitude 8 ever happening in California.
