The Real Meaning of Romans 9: "Jacob Have I Loved, but Esau Have I Hated"

Calvinists use Romans 9 to teach predestination and unconditional election, but what is the real meaning and context of Romans 9? It has to do with the selection of Jacob of over Esau concerning the passing on of the birthright.
"As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." - Romans 9:13.
