DEFCON 5 is the lowest state of readiness. This is Peacetime.

DEFCON 4 is a heightened state of readiness.
More intelligence assets may be deployed or bases go to a higher threat condition.

DEFCON 3 increases readiness so that the air force can deploy its fleet of strategic bombers within 15 minutes.

DEFCON 2 means that the rest of the armed forces are ready to deploy within six hours.

DEFCON 1 Means that Nuclear war is imminent or has already begun.
