Look Like Jesus-Is The Bible Anti-Woman?
Today’s Question: is the Bible Anti-Woman?
Lately I’ve seen a lot of people say they don’t like the bible because it is the most sexist book ever written. Specifically, its anti-feminist. They claim the bible says women have neither power nor rights. They serve three functions, make babies, feed the family, raise the kids. Other than that they stay silent. Or so they claim the Bible says. Tried looking up verses to see where they came from with this but no luck.
I explained to them that way back in the day, the queen of a country would wear a key around her neck. That key was the key to the treasury. In other words it was the women whom handled the finance of a country and by example of the queen this spilled into the household of even the poorest peasants. In other words if the king wanted that new sail boat to be launched, he had to go to his wife and ask, and if she said no, and he knew what was good for him that was the end of it. To my knowledge it was this way from around the time of Jesus, to roughly 100-200 years ago.
In the bible from what I’ve read the woman is supposed to be the partner of the man, not inferior. There is a saying or joke, I forget which, that says the woman wasn't made from the heel to be at a man's foot, they were not made from the skull to be above him, they were made from the rib to be by his side.
Stuff like this always drives me up the wall because one it always seems to start a fight, two its where many argue the word of the bible vs the spirit of the bible comes into play. The only example I have seen of woman having any role in the bible as “prominent figures” was Mary the mother of Jesus. (of course) and Esther, Mordecai's cousin. (at least I think it was Esther I always get her name wrong.) anyways Mary gave birth to Jesus, she also beseeches him to help when at a wedding they were short or out of wine. And Jesus turned water into wine at his mother’s request. In other words Jesus, the son of God, and Perfect man, was subject to a woman...for all of five seconds but my point stands. And those are just the instances of woman taking the star role I know about. I'm sure if I really looked I’d find others. I bring it up because I see lots of feminists saying that the bible is against women having power or rights, others say that they have a place it’s just not in xyz. What does the bible say?
I actually don’t like this subject because it can and often does lead to arguments. But I guess my curiosity and desire to have god end this ridiculous arguing among his children has gotten the better of me. What does the bible say about this and what does everyone else think?
