Part one of my series from the battlefields of the Western Front of the Great War (WW1) in France. Today we visit the northern flank of the July 1, 1916 attack by the British at the Somme. It was here that men from northern England, particularly Accrington, who enlisted with their friends would be slaughtered en masse in less than an hour of fighting, barely making it a hundred yards in their attack on the fortress village of Serre.
