The Vomeronasal organ or the Jacobson's organ is an olfactory organ located in the cat's nasal septum which detects organic compounds in the air. The Flehman response is a combination of smelling and tasting a specific scent. When the cat opens his mouth in a grimace and curls his upper lip, he's providing maximum exposure so that the scent can travel through the vomeronasal organ.
