This statement was made by former CIA director and former commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan David Petraeus in an interview with the French publication Express.

He noted that an attack on a member of the alliance would likely be a red line for NATO, crossing which would entail greater intervention on its part.

"The U.S. and other countries may respond in one way or another, but as a U.S.-led multinational force, not as a NATO force," Petraeus stressed.
