Why Sauron Didn't Guard The Mount Doom?
We all know that Mount Doom is the only place to destroy the One Ring. So it would make sense that an immortal god would have the foresight to guard it. Right? Well although he was immortal, Sauron was blinded by his evil. It was said he could more easily understand a volcano than he could a tree, as a volcano could be used to increase his power whereas a tree just got in his way. In short, he could not understand beauty or good. Thus, he expected any one to simply use the ring to challenge him. After all, that's what he would do in that position. The last thing he expected was for someone to actually destroy the one ring, so he never bothered wasting resources guarding the volcano.
