When Viking 1 reached Mars in 1976, it took some stunning images of the red planet. After the pictures went public, some space enthusiasts pointed out a peculiar human-face-looking figure on the surface of mars. Immediately it took the imagination of the people by storm. Some of them came up with stories that there was life on Mars and that aliens have visited Mars in the past.

Experts at NASA cleared all the misconceptions regarding the martian human face. Experts said the human-face-looking figure is just a pile of rocks casting shadows and giving a resemblance to a human face.

The reconnaissance Orbiter and the Mars Global Surveyor sent high-resolution images of the same spot between 1998 and 2001. The new images confirmed that the anomaly is a normal martian dune looking like a human face because of light and shadow effects.
