Iceland’s unique geographical location gives it a high strategic value, but the country has no air force of its own. So the Alliance runs periodic peacetime deployments of Allied fighter jets, generally for about a month at a time, three times a year. Pilots fly training missions in a particularly challenging environment, which allows Icelandic and other NATO personnel to test their reaction.
