Distro Monday 30 – What’s new in Ubuntu 22.10? Updates for Debian/ Ubuntu Kernel? And More

870

DM 30-1: What’s New In Ubuntu?

You all know by now that I am not a fan of Canonical. However, I need to touch this, at least for the sake of the fact that I know many people use Ubuntu based distros, if not official spins. So what can you expect if you upgrade from 22.04?

Ubuntu Unity – first release as officially sanctioned Ubuntu flavor. Unity was what I cut my teeth on in the Linux world, about 9 years ago. The funny thing with this is that it more or less completes the circle, as Unity started its life as a Canonical-developed desktop environment. If you like the Purple and orange color scheme and you are using Ubuntu anyway, give it a look.

Kubuntu – the KDE flavor of Ubuntu.. a bit of a let-down here, as they opted to go with Plasma 5.25.5, rather than 5.26, so if you choose to go with this flavor, you will miss out on those rather sizeable improvements.

UB Studio – also KDE based, but with lots of bells & whistles for creatives baked right in. The cool thing with this release is that now, you can more easily select which aspects of creative software you want, right in the installer, rather than forcing you to install all of it, whether you want to or not, and they slimmed down the iso, so that is a bonus.

Xubuntu – the XFCE flavor gets the newest version of XFCE and some more theming options, as well as tweks to core apps. Light, but takes work to make it nice, UI wise. Don’t be fooled by the About XFCE panel, here, it is 4.17, a development snapshot of 4.18, which will be released soon.

Lubuntu – the LXQT flavor, comes with the latest version of LXQT, without confusion.

Uibuntu MATE – Latest MATE desktop, apps, etc… If you love MATE you will probably enjoy this. Switched to Pipewire for audio, just as the Budgie flavor did.

Ubuntu Budgie – All the latest Ubnuitu goodness with the latest Budgie desktop over the top of it. MATE and Budgie are similar, in that they are both forks of GNOME, just as XFCE and Cinnamon are. They are working from earlier iterations, mostly prior to GNOME 3.2. Each one has their strengths and weaknesses

Finally, we come to the Kylin flavor – this is, if I recall, developed in China, with a decidedly Win10 flavor. This will look very familiar to newcomers by default, however, I would urge care in that it comes form China. Yes, it is FOSS, but still, be careful.

Breathe that in. Peace. It is yours, whether you feel you deserve it or as though you could never attain it, it is yours, from the hand of Jesus. I know that things look very different from how any sane person would want them to right now, but you can have peace, or “cozy” even when you are in the thick of it, wondering what or how to do next. Peace in knowing the One who controls it all, the One who runs the show, and KNOWING that He is GOOD.

DM 30-2 – Debian & Ubuntu Kernel Updated, Fixes 17 Security Holes

What’s going on, here? Alright, here’s what got fixed:

CVE-2022-3176 and 2602, flaws in the io_uring subsystem which could lead to local privilege escalation (in other words, things that shouldn’t have had the rights to alter your system did, under these flaws, a big deal on servers and in enterprise infrastructure)

CVE-2022-40307 which could lead to either privilege escalation or to denial of service, either in the form of a crash or memory corruption

CVE-2022-20421 which could lead to privilege escalation

CVE-2022-39188 which could lead to either privilege escalation or to a denial of service

CVE-2022-39842, a video driver issue which could lead to a memory heap-out-of-bounds write through an integer overflow error

CVE-2022-41674, 42719, 42720, 42741, and 42722, which could lead to security holes in the WiFi driver stack, and each could lead to either a denial of service or an arbitrary code execution on the affected machines.

CVE-2022-3303 issue in the audio subsystem which could cause a denial of service

CVE-2022-3061 issue in the i-740 driver which could also cause a denial of service

CVE-2022-2663 flaw in connection tracking system which, when connected to a firewall, could allow a user on another computer on the same network to open TCP ports and revealk the public IP address, of to block their connection altogether

CVE-2021-4037 issue in the XFS filesystem which could allow local users to be exposed to bad actors through privilege escalation by making a plain file executable

CVE-202-0171 a cache incoherence issue in the KVM subsystem that could lead to a denail of service

CVE-2022-1184 a flaw in the EXT4 driver that could lead to a use-after-free (an error in memory allocation) that could allow an attacker to hack in and cause a denial of service or a p[rivilege escalation.

That was allot of techspeak, but we kinda knew that would be the case, here… long story short: they made the Debain and Ubuntu LTS kernels that much better and safer for users.

DM 30-3 – Linus Torvalds Announces First Release Candidate for the 6.1 Kernel

Wow… I guess development never sleeps. They just released the 6.0 kernel less than a month ago, and here we are with the first release candidate for 6.1, which will be the fisrt Linux kernel to have parts written in the Rust programming language, which is supposed to be more secure and simpler to write in than the C’s are. Cool stuff, on a purely nerdy level here. How will this affect most of you? It likely won’t for a while at least, but I thought it was worth mention.
