Adultery being apostate /traitor to God, failing to obey GOD HIS law or listen to the Holy Spirit. King David was the example, failure and recovery. HE killed one of his own to gain Bathsheba as a wife, as another son tried to take his throne and more happened as trouble. David knew he had violated GOD HIS law by his agents. Mercy for correction... a worldly pain to follow. Our people are guilty as an agent if our children are being obedient to wickedness.
