This simple and easy to use light therapy lamp is designed to give relief to people suffering from SAD or Seasonal affective disorder.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a recognised and well documented type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. With SAD, symptoms start in the autumn and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Treatment for SAD may include light therapy (phototherapy), medications and psychotherapy.

This is where this light comes in.

In the box is just the SAD lamp, USB power cable, a UK plug adapter and a short but well written user guide, which I include in this video.

The lamp is made from a smooth white ABS plastic and has a built-in kickstand on the rear allowing it to be used in either portrait or landscape formats. Weighing in at just 350 grams the lightweight and compact lamp is 170 x 120 x 15.5 mm in size and small enough to be unobtrusively positioned pretty much anywhere. The controls are minimal with just two touch control buttons, one to select the power and three brightness levels, the other for the four timer options.

The DC5V / 2.1A lamp is powered through a single USB-C port and a UK plug adapter is included although the lamp can be powered from any USB source including a computer or power bank.

The idea is that you sit in front of the carefully filtered and balanced 6500K simulated daylight lamp for set periods, usually at the start of the day or whenever you find gives the best results. Light therapy mimics natural outdoor light and appears to cause a change in brain chemicals linked to mood. It generally starts working in a few days to a few weeks and most sufferers feel a real benefit from it finding that it relieves fatigue and elevates the mood.

Operating it could not be simpler. Press the power button on the front panel to switch it on at 100% brightness, and tap again to set it to 50% and 30%. Long press to switch off. The lamp will return to the last power level when next used. Press the timer button to scroll through the timing periods of 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes with the adjacent small LED confirming the current selection.

It is a pity there is no built-in battery or remote control to enhance ease of use, but no matter, all the key features needed are found here and this unit is significantly less expensive than some others I have tried.

If you find yourself depressed and down at heel during the winter months maybe this £25.47 lamp is just what you need.
