Almost one million deaths occur from exposure to lead every year. Many more people suffer debilitating and lasting effects. Children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure.
This video is the statement on the occasion of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2022 by Dr Maria Neira, Director at the World Health Organization of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health.
Exposures can occur in industrial settings such as mining and smelting operations; and in the manufacturing and recycling of lead-acid batteries, electronic waste, paints, glazes, and solder.
88 countries now have legally binding controls on the production, import and sale of this dangerous commodity.
WHO recommends urgent action to eliminate lead exposure. Raising awareness of the many potential sources of exposure is a first crucial step.
