Building Wildlife Pond, aka 'deer watering hole,' Core trench & dam, PART 1 of 2

In today's episode we are not only improving the cash value of this Southern Illinois land, but the intrinsic value as well. Join us for PART 1 of 2 of this deer watering hole/wildlife pond build as we document the entire process of building a wildlife pond in the woods, aka deer watering hole. In today's episode I'll be using my bobcat e42 R2 series mini excavator and my buddy Phil will be using his compact tractor with a dirt bucket and a back blade. Today we will finish clearing all of the trees from this new pond site, then we will skim all of the roots and dirt off of the top, break out the self leveling laser and lay out the pond dam and pond size. Then we will dig the core trench, also known as a keyway trench. While digging the core trench I will be separating the dirt with the darker dirt and roots going on the back side of the future pond dam, and the 'clean dirt' or clean clay going on the inside of the pond dam so that we can put it back in the core trench to compact it at the base of the future pond dam.
